The Contra Costa Water District (CCWD) is committed to developing multiple uses of its facilities whenever possible for the benefit of all customers. The District has made available portions of the Contra Costa Canal right-of-way for recreational trails. The Contra Costa Reginal Canal Trail offers over 17 miles of paved recreational areas, open to the public for jogging, walking, or bicycling.
The development of the Regional Canal Trail is the result of a cooperative effort between many government agencies to improve the quality of life for Contra Costans. A 1975 three-way agreement between CCWD, the US Bureau of Reclamation, and the East Bay Regional Park District (EBRPD) stipulated that EBRPD could make use of the canal right-of-way to develop, operate and maintain the trail. A similar agreement with the City of Walnut Creek produced the Ygnacio Canal Trail.
The developed portions of the canal trail include a 14.25-mile segment that loops through Martinez, Pacheco, Pleasant Hill, Walnut Creek, and Concord; and a 3-mile section near Contra Loma Reservoir in Antioch. Utilizing the Contra Costa Canal and other public rights-of-way, the trail will eventually connect central and east county stretching the entire length of the 48-mile canal, from Knightsen to Martinez.
